How it works?

EECP® is the first nonsurgical, non-pharmaceutical treatment for patients with angina (chest pain) and chronic heart failure. It helps to increase blood flow to the heart muscles which are deprived of adequate blood supply. The positive consequences obtained after the completion of treatment is seen to persist for years.

Although EECP® is not considered a replacement for coronary artery bypass surgery or balloon angioplasty, it may delay the need for these invasive procedures. In many cases, relief will be sufficient to render them unnecessary. EECP® is also used in patients who have already undergone surgery or angioplasty but not getting sufficient relief of their symptoms.

EECP® therapy is typically provided in 35, one-hour treatment sessions over a period of approximately seven weeks. To receive EECP therapy, the patient lies on a treatment table. Compressive cuffs (similar to large blood pressure cuffs) are securely wrapped around the patient's calves, thighs and buttocks. These cuffs inflate in a distal to proximal sequence in early diastole, and deflate simultaneously in late diastole just prior to the onset of systole. Inflation and deflation are specifically timed to the patient's ECG to optimize therapeutic benefit. The sequential cuff inflation creates a retrograde pressure wave that augments diastolic pressure, increasing coronary perfusion pressure and venous return to the right heart (increasing preload and cardiac output). Rapid, simultaneous cuff deflation decreases systemic vascular resistance, afterload, and cardiac workload.

    Enhanced External counterpulsation (EECP) therapy is a procedure performed on individuals with angina or heart failure or cardiomyopathy in order to diminish their symptoms of ischemia, improve functional capacity and quality of life. EECP therapy works by decreasing the afterload that the heart has to pump against, and increasing the preload that fills the heart, increasing the cardiac output.Since it increases pressure in the aorta while the heart is relaxing (during diastole) EECP also increases blood flow into the coronary arteries, which also occurs during that phase.
